Nurture by nature

Nurture by nature
UMR students embrace the outdoors to illuminate the interconnectedness of health and nature

The University of Minnesota Rochester’s EcoliteracySCHOOL is no common classroom experience; it’s a hands-on leadership program that opts for the outdoors over the lecture hall.

EcoliteracySCHOOL brings UMR students together in mentorship with local high school students interested in biology and health science. The UMR students develop their own unique public health projects that involve guided mentorship engagement and in-person immersive experiences on the North Shore of Lake Superior and in the wilderness surrounding Duluth.

UMR students and their high school mentees then head out on a three-day field trip and complete activities including outdoor food preparation and nutrition education, emergency preparedness training, and mindfulness practice to establish meaningful relationships with one another and with nature.

The goal is to use real-world experience and interactive mentorship as the foundation for illuminating the connections that exist between humans, health, and the environment.
